DHARWAD: E-post, a fast communication service introduced by the India Post is receiving considerably good response in North Karnataka. In the past three months of its launch, around 16,000 posts have been sent in the region through e-post, which is being viewed as a hi-tech replacement for the humble and iconic telegram.
Nudged out by technology, the 163-year-old telegraph service is history now. Though technological revolution in the form of internet and email made telegram redundant, accessibility to email continues to be a major problem for many people, especially in the rural areas. The postal department believes that e-post will bridge this gap by providing instant delivery service to even to remote areas where connectivity is a problem.
E-post was launched by India Post in April this year, during the time when the countdown for the winding up of the telegraph service had begun. The instant service is available in all the 700 departmental post offices of North Karnataka region consisting 14 districts -- Bagalkot, Belgaum, Bellary, Bidar, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Gulbarga, Haveri, Karwar, Koppal, Raichur, Sirsi and Yadgiri.
Postmaster general (North Karnataka region) B P Sarangi said that through e-post, customers can send their messages instantly to any address in India with a combination of electronic transmission and physical delivery through a network of more than 1,55,000 post offices. "E-post sends your scanned message as a soft copy through internet and at the destination scanned message will be delivered to the addressee in the form of hard copy. E-post costs just Rs 10 per page of A4 size irrespective of number of words/characters it contains," he said.
However, more awareness needs to created among people about this new service. Sarangi has requested people to utilize e-post, which is "quicker, cheaper and reliable."
Assistant director (business development cell and staff and recruitment) SD Kulkarni told TOI that in North Karnataka region, nearly 16,000 e-post messages were sent from April 1 till date. He said the matter written by the sender on A4 size paper would be scanned and sent and hence is an authentic document. Applications and other forms sent by e-post are valid, he added.
