International Trade Union News: Sri Lanka's private sector trade union asks for a pension scheme

Mar 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter Company Employees Union (ICEU) has called on the government to establish a pension scheme for the private sector employees.
ICEU Head Wasantha Samarasinghe told a press conference that the union is also to take the matter to the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Trade Union Federation (WTUF).
According to Samarasinghe, the government was trying to introduce amendments to legislation related to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees Trust Fund (ETF) without taking measures to implement a pension scheme for the private sector employees.
He said that after promising last year to introduce a private sector pension scheme, the government has so far done nothing to initiate any such plan.
Samarasinghe said the union would commence agitations for a private sector pension scheme this month and would also call on the public sector to support the move as well.
